-all members of our Leadership Team and Circuit Invitations Committee as staffing for 2015 is considered, for Elizabeth Clark and Rosie Coles as they prepare to take up their new appointments in September 2014, for Christine Sutherby as she faces uncertainties about her future, for Peter Cross on sabbatical; for all delegates to Methodist Conference (June 26-July 3) in Birmingham; for guidance in all decision making processes; for participants in the current‘Worship’ course as they complete it and consider their ‘call’; for urgently needed circuit stewards from the north and west parts of the circuit; and for preparation for Synod (6th Sept at Norton College, Ryedale) specifically in terms of time, organisation, volunteers, safe travel, and links with the venue and our circuits role in this.
Our featured churches:- Westborough, Scarborough and Whitby.
Westborough Methodist Church – Minister with pastoral oversight is Revd. Mark Haynes
Westborough Church is opposite the train station, in the centre of Scarborough. We regularly have over 100 people worshipping with us on a Sunday morning. Scouts and Guide groups meet at Westborough and join us at Parade services on the 1st Sunday of the month. Junior Church, serves a small number of children. Weekly activities include the over 60’s youth club, for the young at heart, a Bible study group, prayer meetings and the Friendship guild. Many external groups use our premises. Outreach is very important at Westborough, our Coffee shop, staffed by volunteers, opens 5 days a week and we have many pastoral visitors who visit people with the bi-monthly church magazine and take church flowers to the poorly, the bereaved, or those celebrating a birthday or anniversary. We host Saturday Breakfasts, providing a breakfast and packed lunch for the homeless. Although a very busy church, we, like many, are faced with an ageing membership and are concerned by our lack of young families. Our prayer is that God works in us and through us, so that we can see the vision he has for Westborough and the other churches in our area.
Whitby Methodist Church – Minister with pastoral oversight is Revd. John Pugh.
One of 15 Christian denominations in the town, we no longer have our own building and the congregation has worshipped in the small Chapel of the Mission to Seafarers building since 1997. Our meeting place is among shops and holiday let accommodation, there is no resident community and little opportunity for outreach in the centre of Whitby. Attendance at Sunday morning worship stays constant at around 23 and we welcome many visitors all year round, sharing in news of their home Churches and activities. The age range of the congregation is over 70 but as good Methodists we enjoy singing and have a resident organist. We enjoy fellowship together after our Service, over a cup of coffee/tea. We have a strong pastoral closeness and we all look out for each other. On the first Wednesday of the month our Open Circle meets and we have many interesting and varied speakers. Occasionally, when the topic is appropriate, we do invite men along! There is an active Churches Together in Whitby and some of us join in these events. Our walk of witness on Good Friday attracted some 50 people to join in, finishing at The Mission for a joint Service. We held a Pentecost Service together at St. John’s Anglican Church on the afternoon of 8th June, followed by a light buffet tea.
