Scarborough Churches are now invited to register their participation in …
SPRING TIDE 14 !
Spring Tide 14 is a week of outreach to the community 21st to 27th June, 2014. It’s aim is to encourage each participating church to make some of its usual midweek meetings “guest events” during the mission week. The idea is then to invite people who do not normally attend church, to attend a guest event. Spring Tide 14 is then a great opportunity to introduce friends, relatives or work colleagues to link up with your own local church.
The week will begin with a town centre Barbecue on Saturday 21st June, from 12.00pm to 2.00 pm in Alma Square. A united churches team is being created to run the Barbecue and there will be a training evening at Scarborough Christian Centre, Castle Road/Oxford Street on Monday 12th May beginning at 7.00pm. We still need more volunteers so if you or members of your church can help, please contact the main enquiry address below or ring 500255 as soon as possible.
On the day after the Barbecue, 22nd June, we are looking forward to an evening with Archbishop John Sentamu at the Spa at 7.30 pm. This will be another great opportunity to bring along friends who do not normally attend church. The seating capacity of the Spa however is notably less than the Futurist where we hosted Archbishop Sentamu the last time he came to an event like this, so booking early is strongly recommended. Tickets can be obtained from St.Mary’s Parish House, Castle Road (T: 500541) from 5th April onwards. Cost: £4 per person.
There are lots of events participating churches can use during the midweek from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th June. All the participating church needs to do is to publicise their guest event(s), produced flyers or invitation cards and have the refreshments ready! Local events can include things like a midweek house group, a ladies coffee morning, a men’s evening, a student get-to-gether, or a youth group – the choice is totally that of the participating church. The Spring Tide 14 Organising Team will then arrange for a guest speaker to come along and share their story of how they came to faith in Christ and if appropriate answer any questions. This very simple format worked exceptionally well in 2011 when we used it for the first time. Many new people were introduced to their local church for the very first time that year. Our special guest for the mission week will be Revd Roger Simpson (York) the Archbishops Evangelist to the North. He is also available for our Spring Tide 14 midweek events, but participating churches will need to contact the Spring Tide Office to arrange this as soon as possible!
The great thing about this kind of approach to mission is that it can be helpful to any Christian Church irrespective of its traditions or worship style. It simply helps churches make new and hopefully long lasting friends.
How such new people are followed up is entirely the choice of the participant church. If however the Vicar / Minister / Group Leader would find it helpful, they or members of their church can accompany their new contacts along to a special presentation of “Alpha Express“ at St.Mary’s Parish House, Castle Road/Auborough Street at 7.30pm on Wednesdays 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd July. Each evening will include a cooked meal as well as a very encouraging introduction to the Christian life on DVD. As the meal will be cooked by the Rainbow Centre Chef, please book your place(s) with St.Mary’s Parish Office, Castle Road (T: 500541) as soon as possible after the mission week.
And finally …… we invite Churches in the Scarborough area to register their participation now so that the Organising Team can provide prayerful support and the guest speakers needed for the participating churches guest events. All that needs to be done right now is to contact us as soon as possible at:
