Life at Priceholme (MHA)

From Elaine Evans:

As many of you know, I was appointed Chaplain at Priceholme, our local M H A residential home in Givendale Road in Scarborough, starting last January.  Since then I can’t believe how lucky I am.

It is a lovely home with up to 30 residents living there. Most of them can get about aided and only a few of them have difficulty getting out of their rooms.  There is a lovely sense of warmth there, from both the staff and the residents and I feel so lucky to be a part of all this.

I spend my time there in different ways, some days I go and share special one to one time with them, I sit and chat with them about anything they like, often they tell me the most amazing stories of their past, where they lived, how they overcame difficulties during the war and what their families (whom they are very proud of) are doing. They really are amazing people with so much to share.

Some of my time over the past few weeks has been a time of sharing with about 6 of them in a Lent Study. I have learnt so much, we have such a lovely time of sharing and being honest about our faith and where it is going.

I also organise the Thursday afternoon Fellowship. I try and get someone different to lead this each week so that our residents get to see new faces. We have had ministers, lay preachers and members of our churches with a special skill, Ruth came to teach us basic sign Language and Louise told us about God’s world under the sea, as she goes scuba diving. All these different things help to enhance the lives of these folk, who were once so much a part of Church life and still want the fellowship with each other and with God. They often can’t get to church, so we bring church to them.

If you feel that you could come along one week and lead our fellowship, please get in touch I would love to hear from you. The one thing that I am struggling with is someone to play hymns for fellowship. Again if you feel this is something you could do either every week or now and again I would love to hear from you. They love to sing, and the c d’s are ok but not as good as being accompanied on the clavinova.

On June 22nd it will be Pricholme’s 50th Anniversary. We are hoping to have all sorts of celebrations that weekend. It is quite an achievement in this day and age to have somewhere still thriving after all that time. We are all looking forward to the celebrations. If you have any connections with Priceholme and would like to help us celebrate either get in touch with the home or with me.

After reading this you feel that you would like to volunteer to help, I’m sure we could find something for you to do, we have a massive garden all around the home and it is difficult for just one man to keep on top of it, the residents like to have time to chat with someone and sometimes it would be good to have you come in and help to do activities alongside our activities co-ordinator. So think about it, have you got something to offer? Please get in touch with me if you think you could do something worthwhile to share in the lives of these lovely people.

Thank you for reading this. My phone number is 01723 373016. I look forward to hearing from you. God Bless. Elaine Evans
